The first creation account offers a clear example of the fact that Scripture does not exactly represent true scientific reality. Although my whole childhood I thought this was how our earth was created, it is clear now that there is a scientific basis for our creation that goes beyond God taking seven days to design our existence. Despite this fact, this passage is one of my favorites. I think the meaning being conveyed in the passage is God’s capabilities as a creator and master of the world. The story shows that humans are created in God’s image and likeness, and that He did masterfully create our existence through evolution. He is responsible for our creation, even though it may have not been a one day project as the passage simply puts it. I think another important part is that the passage offers repetition of God looking down on His creation and saying it is good. I think this symbolizes his satisfaction and happiness with the natural world and the raw beauty of the sea, earth, and all the creatures that roam around it. I think the business of the seventh day is an opportunity to show that after hard work, sit back and look at the process and the outcome and admire the effort and success that comes from it. Although He did not need to rest, He chooses to take a day and admire His work and its beauty. Seven is a number that represents completion and perfection, therefore it only seems right that on the seventh day God steps back and praises creation. Overall I think the meaning of the passage is to exemplify God’s power and love for creation and humans made in His image, and that He has the ability to create a world as complex and beautiful as ours.
